Ed Hill -- 2009 SGMA Hall of Fame Inductee

Performer Ed Hill of Hermitage, Tenn., originally from St. Louis, Mo., attended his induction into the Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame at Dollywood recently in Pigeon Forge, Tenn.

Baritone singer Ed Hill currently performs with the Prophets.

“The minister's son started singing at 15 with Humble Hearts, and later the Prophets Quartet. Ed and The Prophets become regulars on the “Gospel Singing Caravan” television series,” said Charlie Waller, SGMA executive director.

“After Ed retired The Prophets, he joined Hovie Lister and The Statesmen and later with J.D. Sumner of the Stamps Quartet.”

Ed, along with The Stamps, was a permanent member of the Elvis Presley Show until Presley's death in 1977, he said.

For those who ever heard the words “Elvis has left the building,” it was Hill’s voice that said it again and again.

Greater Vision, with Mark Trammell standing in for Gerald Wolfe, performed “The Lighthouse” to honor Hill. Dr. Jerry Goff welcomed Hill to the stage as SGMA board member Earl Eleton inducted him as the two brought the placing of the medallion around his neck with a bit a comedy.

“I want to first thank the Lord for allowing me to live a life in which I got to do what I love - to sing Southern gsospel music,” Hill said. "I hope everyone will make the same best decision as I did to accept Jesus Christ as their Saviour. That is the one important decision you can make in your life. God bless you and thank you very much.”

The Southern Gospel Music Association announced at Dollywood its Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame inductees for 2009.

“We are honored to add these great musical servants to a very elite group of people who have made Southern Gospel music known around the world,” said Dr. Jim Goff, SGMA Induction Committee chairman. “Without their contributions it is safe to say our music would have reached fewer ears and affected fewer hearts and lives. Without them our industry would have been much smaller in its reach.”

The 2009 SGMA class of inductees includes: Neil Enloe, Ed Hill, Harold Lane, Don Light, Bill Lyles, Elizabeth "Lady" Mull, Billy Todd, and Charlie Waller.

The official induction ceremony will occur as part of the festivities of SGMA Day, Oct. 7, 2009.

“I know the inductees, their families, fans and friends will be pleased to hear of this honor,” said Charlie Waller, SGMA executive director. “We will certainly be planning an outstanding induction ceremony this year.”

The day generally features a fun-filled day of concerts, dinner and the induction of the 2009 Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame newest members.

Singing News: Prophets Release Much Anticipated Project (06/13/08)

NASHVILLE, TN(Press Release) - I'll Follow is the debut release from the recent revival of the Prophets by industry veteran Ed Hill. In addition, the group features the talents of veteran Bill Baize, Gaither Homecoming favorite Mike Allen, and newcomer/songwriter Paul Jackson. This has been a labor of love for me, and I dedicate this project to all the Prophets' fans with love and pride."

The new recording features a mix of new songs and updated versions of previous Prophets Quartet songs. Group member Paul Jackson contributed five songs to the album. Additional songs were written or co-written by John Daniel, Daniel J. Mount, Susan Farah, Johnny Minick, Terry Pillow, Charles Billingsley, Cheryl Rogers, Nathan DiGesare and Lari Goss.
